Our History
Around The Corner was created, and made possible by recent paradigm changes in several industries. The hotel industry has moved away from concierge and high-touch services, the marketing industry has evolved around user generated content, and the film industry has adopted much lower cost means of production.
Changes to the hotel industry
Over the past 3 years, the hotel industry has moved downmarket, with investment focusing on 3-star hotels and 4- and 5-star hotels shifting away from concierge-type services. As fewer London hotels employ concierge services and staff turnover climbs, local knowledge at the front desk has almost disappeared. Recommendation websites have provided some broad guidance, but that leaves an apparent need for immediate, human guidance to the local area.
Changes in marketing, TV advertising and film
At the same time, the marketing industry has innovated around user-generated content, developing best practices that capitalise on the fact that consumers trust other consumers more than the businesses that sell to them. The high levels of discipline in direct and online marketing have been applied to “social media” by large advertising agencies and advertisers, allowing these tried-and-true creative practices to be exploited by smaller businesses.
The film industry has become less polarised. Where professional creative talent was once tied to methods and tools that only the BBC and ITV could afford, they’ve innovated production equipment and techniques that make broadcast-quality available to smaller projects.
